Dear Future Journeyman: Embracing the Craftsmanship Legacy
I recently received a heartfelt email from Justin, a fellow craftsman and woodshop instructor, which reminded me of the enduring power of mentorship and the transmission of knowledge. His words and questions have prompted me to reflect on our shared journey and the path that lies ahead for the next generation of craftsmen.

The Power of Mentorship
First and foremost, let me express my gratitude for the time we spent together during the workshop I hosted in collaboration with the Timber Framers Guild in Sandpoint, ID in June, 2023. This 10-day world-class level training workshop fused East and West, featuring two Japanese timber frame experts. The passion and dedication each participant displayed during those few days left a lasting mark on all of us. It's moments like those that reaffirm the importance of passing down the craft to those who follow in our footsteps.
Justin, like many of us, seeks to inspire and guide his students towards a higher plane of thinking and design. His question about books and resources to share with his students struck a chord with me. It reminded me of the profound impact that learning from the greats can have on our own craftsmanship.

Exploring Beauty and Craftsmanship
In response, I encouraged Justin to explore books that extend beyond the realm of woodworking. Being a craftsman isn't just about creating beautiful objects; it's about understanding what makes beauty in the world around us. Beauty is a profound force, whether it's found in the lines of a well-crafted piece of furniture, the curves of a bridge, or the harmony of a thoughtfully designed town. To truly embrace craftsmanship, one must delve into the essence of beauty and its role in shaping our surroundings.
The Tenants of Craft
Imagine a world shaped by hand, where every structure, every object, is a testament to the principles of craft. This vision is not an idle fantasy but a call to action. To make it a reality, we must cultivate two essential qualities: humility and perseverance.
Humility comes from the deep study of masterworks, from being curious, and from working to create something of equal value in our own lifetimes. It's about recognizing that we stand on the shoulders of giants and humbly following in their footsteps.
Perseverance, often referred to as grit, is equally crucial. It's the unyielding determination to keep refining our skills, to push our boundaries, and to overcome obstacles. Craftsmanship is a lifelong journey, and it's the tenacity to keep walking that path that sets us apart.
But there's a third element that can enrich this journey—gratitude. Being thankful for the opportunity to create, for the knowledge passed down to us, and for the connections we make along the way can infuse our work with a deeper sense of purpose and joy.

Seeking Inspiration Beyond the Workshop
To cultivate your craft, don't limit your exploration to woodworking alone. Immerse yourself in art and craft across various mediums. Seek inspiration in the murals on city streets, the architectural marvels of our world, the intricate designs of woven fabrics, and the timeless beauty of pottery.
Remember that inspiration can be elusive in our hyper-connected world. I encourage you to disconnect from your devices—an hour before bed and an hour after waking up. Get eight hours of sleep at night. Greet the day with the first light of morning, whether the sun is shining or hidden behind clouds. Connect with the earth by walking barefoot on the soil and immersing yourself in the cool waters of rivers and lakes.
Disconnect to Reconnect: Embracing the Natural World
Take the time to escape into nature, far from the distractions of modern life. Here, you'll find solace and inspiration in the quiet wisdom of the natural world.
Honor your word and let your actions speak louder than your promises. Build trust with those around you, and your journey will become a shared one.
As a craftsman, cultivate adaptability and resilience. Life is a series of challenges, and your ability to embrace change will define your path.
Learn to speak from the heart, for your words carry the legacy of your craft. Share your knowledge and experience generously.
