SUNNYSIDE, IDAHO

I was inspired by an immense birch tree that had taken root alongside Trestle Creek, a stream that harbors a beautiful spawn of kokanee salmon from Lake Pend Oreille. This tree, once bound for the slash pile, now stands prominently in the home supporting a heavy timbered roof. At the core of the home is my interpretation of a settler’s Appalachian half-dovetail cabin using fragrant, hand-planed Port Orford cedar logs, providing the home with its alluring scent. From this humble log cabin beginning, I imagined sections of the house were added over time to expand as the family grew. Each space is unique yet has a seamless flow throughout the home. Crooked timbers in a variety of local species, found on site and locally, reveal the inherent beauty in each tree. The home’s location, sitting alongside Lake Pend Oreille, makes it an ideal location for a float plane dock.
